How to Be an Ally

1. Engage in Uncomfortable Conversations: Ask a black person how they are really doing and stick around to hear the answer. Sit in your discomfort and listen to their pain and personal experiences. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

2. Validate Their Experience: After listening don’t try to make it all better or say things like “stay strong”. Just try to validate their feelings by saying: “That’s so unfair” or “Thank you for sharing that with me” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

3. Educate yourself: thru news feeds, podcasts or good old fashioned books. Believe it or not George Floyd is not the first case of racial brutality, although it may be the first you have witnessed. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

4. Self Reflect on your own biases. You may not be a racist but you could be one of those people put off by all those nonwhite people moving into your neighbourhood. Self reflect and face your truths. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

5. Challenge popular notions like “all lives matter”. All people matter but not all humans need to prove they matter. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

6. Recognize white privilege. White privilege is simply the fact that your race does not cause you hardship. Privilege is never having to have “the talk” with your kids about how to dress, act, talk walk and behave like a non-threatening black person. This is just one example and the tip of the iceberg. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

7. Show Empathy: Empathy is seeing things from the other’s perspective and it helps to connect people to each other. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

8. Get Involved: Be an ally by doing the suggestions above, and if you can join protests, be a financial supporter, follow some black entrepreneurs, or support black businesses. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

9. Don’t allow guilt or sadness to immobilized you. Use sadness to mobilize yourself towards helping to make change amongst your non-black friends, children and colleagues. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

10.

Be your own influencer. Share what you know about anti-black racism with people who look like you. TAG your non-black friends so they too can benefit from this post.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
