Some of us have a mental illness but we all have mental health. Mental health is the state of our mental wellbeing. Just like we all have physical health, we all have mental health. When something goes wrong with our mental health we can have a mental illness. All of us, however, at some point may have struggles with our mental health. If we’ve ever been stressed out, overwhelmed, overworked, or mentally exhausted, we are being challenged with our mental health. If we’ve ever had thoughts of deep sadness, giving up or throwing in the towel, we are being challenged by our mental health. Mental illness and mental health are very different. Mental illness is when things go wrong with our mental health. Mental illness can be serious and often entails a diagnosis. Mental health challenges can come in the way of stress, burnout or mental exhaustion. Staying mentally healthy takes continuous effort. It takes a lot of self care. Some do self care more naturally than some, just like physical fitness comes more naturally to some. But no matter who we are, we all at some point in time have struggles with our mental wellness. It’s what makes us human.
